in Copenhagen

Pan European conference with top
level participants from 31 European countries.
October 14-15th 1999.

'Something for Everyone
- Public Libraries and the Information Society'

Background: Europe and the European countries are moving forward in order to develop the information society. The democratic values such as free and equal access to information and knowledge is absolutely essential to modern societies which are created with the aid of information technologies - as are cultural diversity, economic developement and lifelong learning. The widespread public libraries represented in all European countries can be crucial tools in this development both on a European and a national level. 

The conference will address these issues. Among the speakers are the Danish minister of culture and an array of prominent people from the European culture and library sector.

The conference is an initiative by PubliCA - EU's conserted action on public libraries.

The venue for the conference is the Radisson/SAS Royal Hotel, Copenhagen. A news conference will be held at the hotel at 13.30 on Friday 15th October 1999.

bibliotekskonference i København

Den 14. og 15. oktober afholdes den første pan-europæiske konference om folkebibliotekernes rolle i informationssamfundet i København. Pressen er velkommen!

Dansk taler er kulturminister Elsebeth Gerner Nielsen, der med sit forslag til ny bibliotekslov for folkebibliotekerne har demonstreret kulturpolitisk vision og styrke.

Mere end 100 deltagere og top repræsentanter fra biblioteks- og kultursektoren fra 31 europæiske lande vil lytte til oplæg om og drøfte centrale problemstillinger for udviklingen af informationssamfund baseret på demokratiske værdier som fri og lige adgang til information.

Folkebibliotekerne kan blive de centrale redskaber til at sikre alle borgere i de europæiske lande muligheden for at blive aktører i informationssamfundet.

Danmark er langt fremme og kan blive en rollemodel for en sådan udvikling.

Konferencen vil udsende en deklaration med anbefalinger til de nationale regeringer - "The Copenhagen Declaration".

Konferencen finder sted på Radisson/SAS Royal Hotel i København. Hotellet vil endvidere danne ramme om en pressekonference fredag d. 15. oktober 1999 kl. 13.30.
